Description

US map colored statewise to demonstrate variation in racial composition of the state imprisonment rate of three groups. This is based on a Sentencing Project report of data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, Prison and Jail Inmates at Midyear 2005. To visualize variation between states, the data is normalized to the national imprisonment rate: 2.290% for blacks, 0.742 for Hispanics, and 0.412% for whites. On the map, zero imprisonment would appear in black [0 of 255]. Imprisonment of all racial groups at the national average rate appears gray [110 of 255], as is depicted for Wyoming and New Mexico for which the Sentencing Project could not obtain useful ethnic data. (white asterisks) The maximum reported regional variation is for imprisonment of Hispanics in Pennsylvania, indicated by 255 of 255 green color value. Imprisonment of blacks is represented by the red color value, Hispanics by the green color value, and whites by the blue color value. Useful ethnic data for Hispanics could not be obtained in states marked by green asterisks, so the green color value for these is colored at the national average level. The authors of the original report caution that states reporting very low rates of Hispanic imprisonment may be undercounting this ethnicity.
