| Description |
English: Sellafield Nuclear Reprocessing Facility, 1986. This vast complex has changed so much over the years that I am not sure of either the precise location or even the direction of this photograph, nor of the other one NY0304 : General view of Sellafield Nuclear Plant, 1986 I have offered. At that time (July 1986), the site was run by British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. and already renamed 'Sellafield'. The prominent 400 ft. chimney with its striking filters on the top was one of the built in 1950-51 for discharge of cooling air from the two Windscale Piles of uranium rods in enormous graphite cores, erected for the production of plutonium for atomic weapons. Electricity was also generated form these piles and in October 1956 the generation of nuclear power became their sole purpose, as Calder Hall Nuclear Power Station and continued until 2003. The large building is a Magnox reprocessing plant |
