Classification of clastic sedimentary rocks, based on Folk (1980) and Dott (1964)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Schematic classification scheme for clastic sedimentary rocks based on composition of clasts (left) and texture (right). The first part of the name (suffix) comes from the composition. In the triangular diagram Q = quarz, F = feldspar, R = rock and mineral fragments. The dominant component gives the suffix, respectively quartz, felds-, or lith-. Note that "rock and mineral fragments" and "feldspar" are underdivided into different options in the original classification by Folk (1980). Also note that alternative classifications may put the boundaries at different percentages.

The volume fraction of matrix (versus clasts) is used to divide clastic rocks into arenite, wacke, or mudstone. The values used here are from Dott (1964). Again, other classifications may put the boundaries at slightly different percentages.
