Description

Item 204103, Historic Building Survey Photograph Collection (Record Series 1629-01), Seattle Municipal Archives.

English: John Erikson Building, northwest corner of First and University, Seattle, Washington, circa 1970s. Includes Pacific Coast Hardware and the Ridge Tavern. Designed by Emil De Neuf for pioneer resident John Erikson in 1902, the building would have risen six stories above First Avenue and would have been the new home of the Seattle P-I. After getting into a row with the city, who wanted to force him to pay for street improvements in front of his building, Erikson cancelled the project out of spite and the building was left at 1 story. This building was demolished in the early 1980s to build the Harbor Steps complex; some of the stone work remains as part of 1301 First Avenue, the Northeast Tower of Harbor Steps.
