English: Seal Sands. Original caption by Mick Garratt: The first site I worked on after moving to the area in 1973. The petrochemical complex was built on land “reclaimed” from inter-tidal mudflats much to the dismay of conservationists as the developments destroyed the rich habitat of the Tees estuary. The reclamation had been going on since industrial Teesside began. By the turn of the 20th-century, more than half of the total 2,400 hectares of mudflats had already been reclaimed. Today a mere 160 hectares is left, protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. An uncomfortable history but one which provided much prosperity to the area. The view is across the Tees estuary from Bran Sands on the south side. In the 80s there were plans for a tunnel under the river but these never came to fruition. A pipe tunnel does exist, built by I.C.I. to connect its sites either side of the river. |
