If this be not an unmixed good—what a delightful surprise if it were!—it can be accepted with resignation by thosewho believe that the mischief of it will betried out in the slow furnace of experience.If the principles which we amuse ourselveswith turning and twisting under the electriclights at the club table shall prove to be allthat their discoverers think—as far-reach-ing and imperious as they imagine—dutyand virtue and my accountability for my-self will not be abolished. I shall find inpractice, however much my aieux may haveinfluenced my tendencies or inclinations,that I shall largely suffer the consequencesof my own acts. If I learn that tough les-son soon enough, the long backward reced-ing line will not wholly prevent me fromdeciding what those acts shall be. :7^ ^^^
