English: During the eXportable Combat Training Capabilities (XCTC) at Fort Stewart, Ga., Guardsmen, along with soldiers from Canada and Scotland, took time out of their training schedule to pay homage to the unforgettable events of 9/11. The ceremony consisted of a speech from Cartersville, Ga., native Capt. David Thornton, chaplain for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-121st Infantry Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), a moment of silence, a prayer and a Scottish traditional lament played on bagpipes. Pvt. Keith Christie of the 51st Highland, 7th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland (7 SCOTS) played “Flowers of the Field,” which is a Scottish lament for solemn occasions. The song ended with the piper marching away so that the music fades. “I’ve been piping since I was 7 years old,” said Christie. “I started playing for the Highlanders a few years ago, and it’s been a privilege of mine ever since.” The 7 SCOTS and their counterparts the 48th Canadian Highlanders have been in an alliance with the 48th IBCT since 1904, the longest lasting alliance in British military history. The international contingent is participating in the XCTC throughout September. |
