d at Pekin in June last year,the French added to Tonking (1) the principality of Deo-van-tri, of whichLai-chau is the capital; (2) the district of Pu-fang; (3) the region ofMuong-U, which commands the waterway of the Nam-U ; and (4) thecountry of the Pa-fat-sai, whence all the surrounding peoples obtaintheir supply of salt. By the same treaty certain commercial advantageswere granted by the Chinese to French traders. But the most important changes have been effected by the Anglo-French treaty, signed on January 15th, the chief points of which weregiven on p. 97. By this the independence is guaranteed of that part ofSiam comprising the valleys of the Menam and certain smaller rivers.This area is indicated by the dark-shaded portion of the map. Theremainder, marked by a lighter shade, is in the meantime Siamese terri-tory, but it is not secured from aggression by any stipulations in thetreaty. On the west it includes the Siamese states of the Malay penin- NEW BOUNDARIES IN FARTHER INDIA
