Deutsch: Die enorme Größe des Reflektors wird erst im Vergleich mit einem Menschen wirklich fassbar. Die seitliche Kante des Reflektors ist 5 Meter lang, die vordere Kante überspannt mehr als sieben Meter und hängt dabei weniger als 3 mm durch. Eine wirklich gelungene und stabile Konstruktion, die notfalls auch mit lediglich zwei Personen aufgebaut werden kann. Die enorme Größe des Reflektors ist nötig, weil bei der AfriSAR-Kampagne auch das sehr langwellige P-Band eingesetzt wird. Bei 70cm Wellenlänge taugen die im Regelfall eingesetzten 1,50m großen Reflektoren nicht mehr zur Kalibrierung des Signals.
Wissenschaftler des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) fliegen vom 01. bis zum 29. Februar im zentralafrikanischen Gabun zahlreiche Messflüge, um den Zustand des Regenwaldes zu bestimmen. Dabei setzen sie hochmoderne Radartechnologie ein. Die gewonnenen Daten helfen dabei, Klimamodelle zu verbessern und die Erderwärmung besser zu verstehen. Die Kampagne wird in Kooperation mit der europäischen (ESA), der französischen (ONERA), der gabunischen (AGEOS) und dem amerikanischen Raumfahrtzentrum (NASA) durchgeführt. |
