Title
English: Saxon Coins
Description
English: A St Edmund penny minted by the Vikings of East Anglia, one of the Saxon coins decorating the margins of Moll's map of Huntingdonshire, sold separately and as Map 24 in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales..., copied from Figure 21 of Tabula I Nummi Saxonici on Page 135 of Obadiah Walker's "Notes on the Saxon Coins" appended to the English translation of William Camden's Britannica.

Notes:
Legend: + SC EADMVND RE [intending SC EADMVND REX, Sancte Eadmund Rex, O Holy Edmund or O St Edmund]

Walker's note misidentifies it as being issued by a king of Wessex, stating "21. The one and twentieth is St. Edmond, King of the East Angles, crowned at fourteen years old, at Buers, against his will: a very pious, valiant, and hopeful prince. In the year 871 his kingdom was invaded by the Danes; against whom most valiantly fighting at Theotford, his army was routed, himself taken, and shot to death with arrows. Neither this, nor the two following seem to have been coined by him; but, as I conceive by some of the West Saxon Edmunds, who were all very much devoted to this holy martyr; though they may also denote King Alfred. The reverse seems to be of the mint-master." For an image of an actual coin of this issue, see here. On the moneyer, see the record here.

London: Sold by H. Moll over-against Devereux-Court in the Strand; Tho. Bowles, Print and Map-Seller near the Chapter-House in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and J. Bowles Print and Map-Seller over-against Stocks-Market. 1724.
