Description

This photo is in an album my spouse's uncle Elstner Hilton compiled when he lived in Japan from 1914 to 1918. While most of the photos were taken in Japan, some were not. This photo is one example.

I believe this image is of a sawmill in Korea.

This photo is interesting for a number of reasons, including the men's hairstyles. If you look carefully, you'll see they have braids wound around their heads. I think these are queues. What's puzzling is that queues were a Chinese custom, yet I'm fairly certain the photo was taken in Korea.

There are three possible explanations: 1) the men were Chinese laborers working in Korea; 2) the Koreans also wore queues; or 3) the photo was taken in China.

The third explanation is the least likely, since Uncle Elstner wrote captions for photos in this series that identified the scenes as being in Korea.

    ps: I now have reason to believe that the photos of Japan may be stock photos that Uncle Elstner purchased and pasted into his album. There may be some exceptions: the images of his sister, Miriam, and photos of logging operations in the Phillippines.
