Summary
[edit]DescriptionSaw Mill (1).JPG |
English: Saw Mill at Dunham Massey
The building was a corn mill for about 250 years and it would have been very important to the owners of Dunham Massey. "Soke Rights" meant they could insist that all the corn grown by their tenants was milled here. Old records document the grinding of corn and the rolling of malt, some of which was used in the house. As production of corn increased the mill was replaced by a larger mill and converted to a saw mill which was intended only for use by the estate and its farms, producing fence and gate posts, floorboards, window frames, lintels and other carpentry and joinery items. In the early 20th century the mill was replaced by a modern steam driven mill outside the park. |
