Summary

[edit]
Description SAVANNAH, Ga. – Geologists and technicians with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Savannah District operate a new TerraSonic drill rig—a piece of high-tech machinery that is the only one of its kind within USACE—June 25, 2014. Pictured: Steven Widincamp, Chief, Explorations Unit. The Savannah District will use the sonic drill in subsurface and geotechnical investigation projects, serving various state and federal customers throughout the nation. The new sonic drill gives Savannah's drilling team increased capability to drill through all types of soils and most rock. It causes minimal disturbance to the drilling areas; reduces investigation-derived waste; and saves time in the overall sampling process due to safety and efficiency improvements. Savannah's subsurface investigations team is a unique capability within USACE, providing expertise in groundwater sampling and analysis; embankment investigations; evaluation and design of concrete foundations; remediation planning for the cleanup of hazardous, toxic and radioactive waste; and more.
