Summary
[edit]DescriptionSarcophagus with Myth of the Origins of Rome 02.jpg |
English: Mattei Collection.
Medium-grained crystalline marble. The complete decoration of the front of this sarcophagus, of which only the bottom part survives today, is known thanks to a drawing in the Topham collection at Eton. The work depicts three episodes from the foundation of Rome: at the centre a religious ceremony with Mars, Romulus, and a young vult official, on the left the rape of the Sabine women, on the right a scene of war betwee Romans and Sabines. The panel dates to around AD 170-180. On the lower half of the sarcophagus a medieval (6th-7th Century) reworking is is visible. |
