Summary

[edit]
Description

2nd Century AD.

Only the front and sides survive of this sarcophagus with Muses and divinities. Formerly it was located in the garden of the Palazzo Farnese. Its front is divided into five fields by finely chiseled pilasters, from which are hung garlands. The central field depicts an enthroned Zeus. To his left can be seen Apollo with his lyre. The veiled female figure seated on the right is identified as Mnemosyne, mother of the Muses, or as Hera. The panel to the left contains Calliope, muse of epic poetryl; that to the right depicts a Muse with volumen. On the sides of the sarcophagus are Melpomene, muse of tragedy, who holds a mask to her face with her hand, and Thalia, muse of comedy, who lifts a comic mask in her right hand. Despite a few detais in the composition that support the hypothesis that this was a modern work, the sarcophagus can be assigned to an early period of Roman sarcophagi production.
