Summary
[edit]DescriptionSanibel Island Lighthouse (5733079383).jpg |
Sanibel Island is home to the first light station on Florida's gulf coast. It began service in 1884. It was originally equipped with a 3rd order fresnel lens. The orignal lens was replaced with a 300mm drum lens that had been used in a lightship. In the 1980s, the 300mm lens was replaced with a 190mm lens that is still in use today. One interesting feature is that the central column of the tower does not reach the ground. You must climb 10 feet of stairs to reach the start of the column. If you look close at these photos, you'll see an osprey sitting on the railing of the watchroom. |
