Published by the Associated Cartoon Service. Artwork by Chas. H. Dickson, Jr.Samuel H. Piles (1858-1940) was born in Kentucky. He studied law and opened a law practice in Snohomish County, Washington, in 1883, later moving to Spokane, and then Seattle in 1886. In Seattle, he was city attorney and assistant prosecuting attorney for the third judicial district. From 1895 to 1905 he was general counsel for the Pacific Coast Company. He was elected to the United States senate in 1904, and served from 1905 to 1911, and then resumed practicing law in Seattle. He retired to California, where he died in 1940. He married Mary Ellen Barnard in 1891, with with whom he had three children. |
