Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Provoost House, 252 Linwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, June 2020. One of the earliest extant buildings on this stretch of Linwood Avenue, the house dates to c. 1867 and is exemplary of the then-in-vogue Italianate style: the asymmetrical double gables on the façade both have projecting eaves supported by twinned scroll-sawn brackets; between them is a pedimented entrance; to its left is a modest front porch with balustrade; the windows are narrow and crowned by round arches. The house served as home to two generations of its namesake family: it was built for Samuel Armour Provoost (1811-1887), a partner in the sailmaking firm of Provoost & Cairns who outfitted boats on Buffalo Harbor from their waterfront chandlery, then, after his death, the house passed into the hands of his son, attorney John Moffat Provoost (1856-1932), who remained there until 1921. The house remains in private hands today.
