Summary
[edit]DescriptionSaltwick Alum Works - geograph.org.uk - 313339.jpg |
English: Saltwick Alum Works The barren shale in the foreground covers the site of the former Saltwick Alum Works which operated from 1649-1791. It was started by Sir Henry Cholmley on his return from banishment after King Charles 1 had been executed. Operations ceased between 1708 and 1755. Prior to the alum house being built in 1770 it is supposed that the raw alum liquor was shipped to South Shields. |
