Summary
[edit]DescriptionSalisbury Cathedral - West Front - geograph.org.uk - 1261697.jpg |
English: Salisbury Cathedral - West Front The impressive western façade of Salisbury Cathedral. Its spire, at 404ft the tallest in Britain, does not appear so tall from this perspective. Salisbury Cathedral is unusual in that it was built in a relatively short time period - just 38 years - between 1220 and 1258, though the spire was not added until 1320. This means that almost uniquely for a Gothic cathedral it is entirely built in one architectural style namely Early English. Even though the build period overlapped the more flamboyant Decorated Style the architects and masons - and Dean & Chapter no doubt - obviously decided to continue the building in the earlier style, perhaps for reasons of homogeneity or perhaps they were simply sticking to original drawings. |
