Summary
[edit]DescriptionSaint John's Basilica, Seljuk.jpg |
English: Saint John's Basilica, Selcuk (or Seljuk), Izmir, Turkey, October 2009. Selcuk was originally a Greek settlement, Agios Theologos. The Emperor Justinian built the basilica in the 6th Century, ostensibly on the site of the tomb of St. John the Apostle. Beyond tge Basilica is Ayasuluk Castle on Ayasuluk Hill which originally had been a Hittite settlement of the 2nd millenium BC (called Apasa); it then became a Mycenean settlement and by 1050 BC was a Hellenistic settlement. The hill was probably the original position of Ephesus before it moved to the site of the present ruins. The castle was first built by the Byzantines (Emperor Justinian) in the 6th Century (adjacent to Saint John's Basilica) and enlarged/improved by, first the Seljuk (or Seljuq) Turks in the early 14th Century, and then the Ottoman Turks in the late 14th Century. |
