Description
English: Intense winds over the Sahara Desert pushed a river of dust across the Mediterranean Sea in late April 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on April 30. The image does not show the source of the dust, but additional imagery reveals that the stream of dust flows from well inland in Libya, where vast sand seas hold plentiful material for dust storms. The broad stream of tan dust appears to be more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) long and arcs from Libya, over the Mediterranean Sea, then over Italy (west), Greece (southeast), and Albania (northeast). Albania and Greece also lay under a broken cover of cloud. The cloud cover may suggest a storm system in the region feeding the high winds further south and contributing to the dust storm.
