SWYOR-1EC671 Modern Seal
Description
English: A cast lead Russian flax bale seal dating from the Modern period, dated 1869, originating from the port of Archangel. The seal is sub-oval in shape and has a pair of parallel holes running through its width (bulla style). Each side bears an inscription in Cyrillic in moulded relief within a circular border. The letters and numbers on seals denote the grade or quality of the flax, hemp, or tow; the name of the quality control inspector, the port of dispatch, and the initials of the grower/owner/agent; the date refers to the date of grading. The seal has a length of 31.00mm, a width of 27.96mm, and a thickness of 4.16mm. It weighs 21.88g.

We are very grateful to Ged Dodd of the Peacehavens project for his help in transcribing and identifying this seal. His identification and notes are as follows:

Obverse:- APX. БPA / ДECЯT: / CTEПAH HEУMOУ transcription: Archangel Bracked by Inspector STEPAN NEUMOU

Reverse:- APXAHГ.ПOP / КУДѢЛ. / 1СОРТЪ / Я.П.B / 1869 transcription: Archangel Port (inspected) as 2nd Sort Kudel (the coarse broken part of hemp after the Heckling and Scutching processes) in 1869.
The Grower/Owner/Agent initials are Я.П.B (Ya.P.V)
