Description

SHANDY:

The weekly markets are very popular economic institutions in tribal areas.They are called "Santhas" in their own local dialect.They are no reggular markets or regular shops in the most of the tribal villages in the view of geographical isolation and lack of communication and transportation facilities. The weekly markets are organized at fixed places and fixed timings on a particular day of the week .Generally the shandly points may cover the 30-50 surrounding habitations with in a radius of 20-30 kms.

A person of the Shandy place is occupied by non tribal traders and Girijans co-operation corporation ltd.for purchasing agriculture and Non timber forest produce from tribals while the remaining part of the shandy may occupied with the several stalls installed by both tribal and nontribal traders selling various essential commedities Salt, kirosine,dry fish, cigers,vegetables,cloths,cosmetics and agriculture implement etc.

It is significant to note that generally wife and husband along with children visit the shandys by carring their agricultural items.Even if they do not have any commodities to sell or purchase,They visits markets purely to see their own relatives .On the day of Shandy men and women may decorate themselves their decorative style and visit Shandy. It is also a place for ceremonial bond friendship that takes place with cotribals and non tribals.

The weekly market contribute for the integration of simple tribal societies with the mainstream of the nation.They have many opportunities to learn from other pepole and other agencies.
