English: In this devotional painting, the Virgin Mary is seated with the child Christ in her lap. Behind her rise the Monserrate Mountains, near Barcelona, where a Benedictine abbey was constructed. Monserrate ("sawed mountain") refers to the vertical cracks caused by earthquakes. Spanish immigrants images like this to Puerto Rico. The Virgin Mary's image was popular in Puerto Rico, where carved and painted versions were widely copied for mass-produced prints and prayer cards. |
