Russula atrorubens Quél. Image location: Aarschot, Vlaanderen, Belgium Description: Pileus: 11-36 × 4-7 mm; convex to plane with low and fairly flat umbo; slightly sulcate margin; pruinose when young, somewhat remaining pruinose in the centre; finely granular surface (20x magn.) probably caused by sphaerical endcells in the pileipellis, dry to slightly tacky; starting off plum coloured, gradually showing more red around the margin, dark blackish purple in centre; cuticle peels to 1/3-1/2, reddish tones underneath the cuticle. Lamellae: L: 56-75, l: 0-1; horizontally adnate, margins very finely fimbriate; subdistant; very little colour of the pileus spilling over at the margin of the pileus; very few lamellulae; white. Spore print: White. Stipe: 23-45 × 3-9 mm; cilindrical to subclavate, centrally attached; dry, surface finely but clearly rugulose over entire length; white with over time (after picking) slightly reddish brown base; very lightly attached to the ground. Context: Firm, brittle, solid throughout; white, ever so slightly reddish in outmost base, cortex clearly visible directly after cross-section, but gradually fading over time. Smell/taste: No particular scent; very actrid after a short amount of sourness. Chem. ana.: Quick and fairly strong pinkish-orangy reaction to FeSO4, after 15 minutes reaction runs over large section of stipe around initial bruise; slight greenish after KOH 3% on context of stipe. Microscopy: - Spores: (Sub)globose to broadly ellipsoid; warts and small ridges forming a near to complete reticulum, which can be thin to fairly thick; warts are low (<0,5 µm). - Measurements (1000x; H2O + Melzer; oil-im.; 1 sd = 1,02 µm; n=9) - 8,16 × 5,10 µm - 8,16 × 6,12 µm - 7,14 × 6,12 µm - 7,14 × 6,12 µm - 7,14 × 5,10 µm - 7,14 × 6,12 µm - 6,12 × 5,10 µm - 8,16 × 6,12 µm - 7,14 × 6,12 µm av. 6,63 × 5,20 µm stats: (6,12) 6,63 (8,16) x (5,10) 5,20 (6,12) µm Ecology: Salix sp., swamp forest, growing in small groups.
