Description

Historical marker for the Rush-Bagot Treaty at the "Columbia Residences" (formerly Columbia Hospital for Women) at 2425 L Street NW (near Pennsylvania Avenue and 25th Street), Washington, D.C. (38°54′13.7″N 77°3′8.5″W / 38.903806°N 77.052361°W / 38.903806; -77.052361).

Transcription:

Peace through limitation of naval armament was promoted between the Dominion of Canada and the United States of America by the signing of the Rush-Bagot Agreement, April 28 and 29, 1817, providing for the restriction of naval forces on the Great Lakes. This notable agreement was negotiated on behalf of Canada in the British Legation which stood on this site. Placed April 29, 1935 by Kiwanis International.
