e of my visit, but for obvious reasonsI will refrain from saying which were considered tobe the best. To me the farm attached to Ladelund was asinteresting as the school. Thirty cows are kept, anda very fine bull of the red Danish breed which in ap-pearance, although darker and larger, resembled ourEast Anglian redpolls. Mr. Overgaard told me thatfrom these cows an average annual milk yield—which,by the way, is being raised every year—of 8000 lbs.Danish is considered satisfactory, although from veryexceptional animals 16,000 lbs. have been obtained. All the milk from these cows, together with somethat is bought in the district, after separation is made 16 RURAL DENMARK into butter in churns driven by a fourteen horse-powerengine. This butter is hardly touched by the hand atany stage of its manufacture. But to describe all themachines in use at Ladelund would be too long. These are everywhere in this remarkable educationalestablishment, which may well serve as a model toother lands.

As we drew near to Askovwe overtook or were overtaken by numbers of peopletravelling thither, on foot or upon bicycles. All ofthese were well-dressed, and with the usual Danishpoliteness saluted us as we passed. At first I thoughtthat they must be bound for some festivity, until itwas explained to me that this festivity was nothingmore gay than an afternoon lecture upon a subject ofhistorical interest. Here perhaps I should explain that Askov is oneof the most famous of the Peoples High Schools, which are, I believe, peculiar to Denmark, whereabout eighty of them exist. These schools arepatronised by young men and women of betweenseventeen and twent
