35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Charadriiformes; Family: Laridae; Genus: Thalasseus; Genus species: Thalasseus maximus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 46 cm; Weight: 350-450 g; Identification: The royal tern has a black face mask, a white forehead and crown, and a spiky crest at the rear of the head. The royal tern also has white ring around its eyes and a deeply forked tail; Habitat: Coasts, sandy beaches, salt bays; Diet: Carnivore: fish, aquatic invertebrates; Reproduction: Royal terns nest on the ground in colonies. Both parents incubate their 1-2 eggs for 30-31 days. The chicks fledge at 28-35 days of age, remaining with the parents for eight months; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: California populations of the royal tern are declining due to decreasing populations of the Pacific sardine, a main food source.
