DescriptionRouge Bouquet Fighting 69th Memorial Service World War I March 1918.gif |
English: Memorial service held on the battlefield at the Rouge Bouquet wood in France near Baccarat, Meurthe-et-Moselle. A 7 March 1918 German artillery bombardment had buried 21 men of the "Fighting 69th" Regiment NY National Guard (part of 165th Infantry Regiment, 42nd "Rainbow" Division)--unable to rescue the buried men because of the continued intense bombardment and mudslides, 19 died and only two were rescued alive. A poem called "Rouge Bouquet" by Joyce Kilmer commemorated the event. |
