Notes
Nederlands: In 1873 reisde Courbet terug naar zijn geboorteplaats Ornans waar hij twee schilderijen maakte in de tuin van zijn vader. Op dat moment stonden de appelbomen in bloei.

Courbet heeft veel in de directe omgeving van zijn geboorteplaats aan de rivier de Doubs geschilderd. Het kasteel, de klokkentoren en vooral de typische rotsformaties in de omgeving vinden we steeds in zijn werk terug.

Min of meer bij toeval zijn de twee schilderijen van de appelbomen in de boomgaard van Courbets vader in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen terecht gekomen. Het stuk uit de collectie Van der Vorm vormt de pendant van een schilderij dat oorspronkelijk deel uitmaakte van de collectie Van Beuningen en nog steeds te zien is in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (inventarisnummer: 2591).
