Title
Rosary or Paternoster Bead from Bigby
Description
English: Copper alloy.

Bead. Cast biconvex bead with central aperture of diameter 6.8mm. Possibly a paternoster bead: a larger bead on a devotional rosary marking a stage at which decades of the Ave Maria were interrupted by recitation of the Pater Noster. Heavily polished by wear. Though increasingly popular through the later Middle Ages, the rosary was correspondingly poorly regarded after the Reformation, when it was to be forbidden as an especially Popish or Roman Catholic practice. In Linconshire, this prohibition was probably strictly enforced after the Pilgrimage of Grace. Suggested date: Late Medieval to Early Post-Medieval, 1350-1550.

Diameter: 14.6mm, Thickness: 5.8mm, Weight: 4.14gms.
