Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is a Roman marble statue of the god Mercurius, whom the Romans identified with the Greek god Hermes. It dates to between c. 30 and c. 50 CE and is carved from Parian marble. The sculpture originally had wings on either side of the head and may have been originally holding a caduceus and a sack of gold symbolizing Mercurius's role as the god of commerce. It is currently held in the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston, Massachusetts.
