Title
Roman lozenge plate brooch (front and reverse view)
Description
English: Copper alloy lozenge shaped plate brooch dating to the Roman period or second century (AD 100 – AD 200).

The brooch has rounded projections on all four corners. The upper and lower projections are larger than those on the side and are also decorated by a single groove which extends around the base. The projection at the top of the brooch has the remains of an integral copper chain loop. The break is not recent and the rest of the chain loop is missing. In the centre of the brooch are the remains of a single iron rivet. The rivet was most probably used to secure a now missing, lozenge shaped enamelled panel. The reverse of the brooch is plain and undecorated except for the single rivet hole. Two reward facing lugs are evident at the top of the brooch. These were used to support a hinged pin which is now missing. Evidence of iron corrosion around the lugs suggests that either the axis bar or the pin itself was made from iron. The brooch has a large pin rest, comprised of a folded, integral piece of copper.

The brooch is light green in colour and in a poor condition. It is 51.8mm long, 27.5mm wide, 2.9mm thick and weighs 10.55g. For similar brooches see Hattatt, R 1987. Brooches of Antiquity. Oxbow: Oxford
