Title
Roman hobnail (profile, profile)
Description
English: A Roman iron hob nail dating to c.AD 43 - 410. The head of the nail is drop-shaped in plan and domed. It has an incomplete square shank, which is bent forming a J-shape in profile. The shank tapers to a blunt terminal.

The object has a well-developed dark brown patina. It measures 13.33mm in height, a maximum of 7.20mm wide across the head 2.22mm thick across the shank. It weighs 0.4g.

Hob nails were used in Roman footwear (caligulae). Similar hobnails and the pattern which were created with them are illustrated in Manning (1995), p.120-22.
