Title
Roman coin: silver siliqua of Constantius II obverse
Description
English: Silver siliqua (2.12g), probably a contemporary copy, of Constantius II (AD 337-61), dating to AD 355-60 (Reece Period 18). Mint of Arles. RIC VIII, p. 223, cf. no. 255/6var.

Obv. D N CONSTAN – TIVS P F AVG; Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed right

Rev. Star in wreath

Mintmark: TCON

The weight of this coin (2.12g) informs us that it was probably struck in the period AD 355-60. The reverse type was reserved for use with the junior emperor, in this case Julian.  There are two entries for Julian in RIC VIII (p. 223, nos. 255-6).  The initial explanation was  that this is a hybrid, the result of the moneyer using an obverse die of Constantius II by mistake. The only reverses recorded for Julian are marked TCON, as is this coin, which seemed to suppors this notion. However, closer inspection of the portrait and lettering appears to suggest that it might be a contemporary copy.
