Title
Roman buckle
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper-alloy late Roman knife. The surviving section depicts a horses head. The neck is oval in cross section (8.5mm in length, 5.9mm wide) and narrows towards the throttle before expanding towards the mandible. A raised ridge depicting the mane runs along the back of the neck (11mm in length). The head projects outwards at a ninety degree angle with a broadly circular cross section. Two ears are formed by to raised ridges which are defined to the front with a incised groove in front of two circular incisions which depict the eyes. The eyes are separated by the frontal bone which is undecorated, the face then narrows towards the nasal bone with has a broadly triangular cross section. The mouth is formed from a horizontal groove, two broadly oval punches located just above the mouth depict nostrils. The mandible is decorated with a very fine row of oval punches which run from the mane to the mouth. At the base of the neck a small circular projection is visible (3.35mm in diameter).

A similar example can be found on the database, NMS-C3A314. Artefacts with a similar circular projection can be seen on Roman knife terminals eg. LEIC-69C54.
