Title |
Roman brooch; penannular brooch |
||
Description |
English: Roman brooch; cast copper alloy penannular brooch of Roman date, although specific dating beyond that is difficult. The brooch has a circular cross section with expanded, also circular, terminals. Each terminal consists of a slightly thickened section decorated with two transverse grooves, then a small narrow section, then the main terminal in the form of a thicker area with a further two transverse grooves. The decoration runs all the way around the terminals. There is a broad collar of copper alloy wrapped around the brooch, which is the start of the pin, although the remainder is now missing.
Width 42.3mm, depth 29.5mm, thickness 6.1mm, weight 8.09g Ref: Hattatt ‘A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt’s Ancient Brooches’ (pp. 339, fig. 198, nos. 1279, 108 & 647) |
