Title
Roman Zoomorphic Buckle
Description
English: A cast copper alloy zoomorphic buckle of late Roman or early post-Roman date. The buckle measures 23.3mm by 25.6mm by 3.7mm and weighs 5.5g. The buckle's frame is broadly D-shaped, with a flat back and moulded convex front. A pair of outwards-facing horse-heads projects from the outside edge. They are decorated with lightly incised marks which represent the eyes, mouth and mane. The outside edge of the buckle is convex and has three abstract incised motifs: two ring-and-dots and a central arrow. The rest of the frame has a rounded cross-section and the pin is missing. The buckle is of Hawkes and Dunning's type 1B.
