Title |
Roman Tutulus brooch |
||
Description |
English: A worn copper-alloy tutulus brooch (Hattatt, ref 539). A circular plate brooch, 28.2mm in diameter, that has a raised outer rim with six small lugs, spaced at regular intervals around the outside edge. Four of these lugs are purely decorative, but two lugs directly opposite each other, are integrally moulded with, and conceal, the pin housing and the catchplate. Just inside the raised rim are a pair of shallow concentric grooves incised upon a hollow conical body (approx 1.5mm thick) which rises 8mm and terminates in a flat central disk 9mm dia. This central disk is punctuated with a raised central pip, 2mm dia. The hollow reverse of the brooch is ‘as cast’ and only one of the pair of perforated lugs which held the now missing pin is present. A small lug on the opposite side to the pin fitting is all that remains of the catchplate. A well preserved exmple of oner of these brooches can be seen at ESS-033B64. |
