Title |
Roman Tutulus Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy 2nd to early 3rd century Roman disc brooch of the conical tutulus type. The circular brooch originally had six plain, equally-spaced peripheral lugs projecting out from the rim; the stubs of four now remain and two correspond with the pin fittings on the reverse. The front of the brooch is slightly dished around the periphery and then tapers inwards and upwards to form a raised flat-topped cone that terminates in a pellet set within in a recessed circular field with a prominent rim. Just within the raised circumferential outer rim of the brooch are two concentric incised circular lines. On the lower surface is a dished concavity corresponding with the cone.The remains of the two lugs forming the hinged pin fitting and the corresponding folded catchplate survive on the reverse of the brooch. Similar tutulus disc brooches can be found illustrated in Hattatt's 'A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattat's Ancient Brooches', p. 347, number 539. Brooches of this type are dated AD c.100-250. |
