Description |
English: The copper alloy core of a debased or counterfeit silver plated denarius of Caracalla or a provincial copy in bronze based on the official denarius, from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of Northamptonshire, sold separately and as Map 25 in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... The illustration is a reengraving of Figure 12 in Tabula I Nummi Romani from William Camden's Britannia, Vol. I, p. 98.
Obverse: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT [Antoninus Pius Augustus Britannicus, Emperor Antoninus Pius of British Fame] Reverse: VICTCRIA BRIT [intending VICTORIA BRITANNICA, British Victory, but attested on other coins as VICTORIAE BRIT, Victoriae Britannicae, Of British Victory] Camden's figure also omits the exergue SC [Senatus Consultato, by Order of the Senate or with the Consultation of the Senate] on the reverse side. Camden's notes state "8. The 8th (which is Caracalla's, but is not put in its proper place) plainly shows by the numerals that he conquered the enemy in Britain in the year of our Lord 214. As also by the trophy, which Virgil in these verses has described more lively than the best engraver can possibly do. "Ingentem quercum decisis undique ramis "12. The same inference is to be made from the 12th, which is the same Caracalla's." Actual silver coin of the same type, described as "RIC IV.1# 231A, OCRE# ric.4.crl.231A... Head of Caracalla, laureate, bearded, right... ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT Antoninus Pius, Augustus, Britannicus. Antoninus Pius emperor (Augustus), conqueror of the Britons... Victory, winged, draped, advancing right, holding transverse trophy in both hands... VICTORIAE BRIT Victoriae Britannicae. To the victory over the Britons. Mint Rome (ancient), Italy... Mass varies: 2.7–3.687 g; Diameter varies: 18–19.5 mm..."Français : Sujet : Monnaies
