Roman: Ring
Description
English: Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring is broadly oval in plan and lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. The profile of the ring is slightly distorted and this may be due movement in the soil rather than wear. There are traces of irregular file marks on several surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. A slight thickening of the ring is present on one edge - this maybe remains of a casting jet. The ring is a light - mid greenish grey colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a Medieval or later date. The function of the ring is varied and although it is worn a direct use cannot be attributed.

The ring measures 28.7mm diameter, 2.9 and the hoop is 1.9mm thick. The internal diameter is 23.1mm and the ring weighs 1.98 grams.
