Summary
[edit]DescriptionRobert and Catherine Mawer gravestone 005.jpg |
Mawer memorial, dedicated to the sculptor Robert Mawer (1807-1854), in the churchyard of St Mark's Church, Woodhouse, Leeds, West Yorkshire. This is a Grade II listed monument, no. 1256146. Mawer's wife and son wer both sculptors, but it is probably carved by his wife Catherine for the following reasons: (1) Her name has been added later, by a different hand, and the names of her relatives who died before she did, have been added (but not his relatives); (2) The back of the monument features a garland which Robert and Catherine carved on St George's Hall, Bradford, and on Moorlands House, Leeds; (3) When Robert Mawer died, their son Charles was aged 16, just beginning his apprenticeship. Showing back of monument. Note: Between 1997 when the monument was listed, and 2015 when it was photographed by Geograph, the urn on the column and the heads of the two angels were removed. |
