Robert Stewart Hunter was born on 27 October 1892 in Langley, Kansas. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 5 January 1914. He was honorably discharged on 19 October 1916 to accept a probationary appointment as a 2d lieutenant. On 27 January 1928 he sailed to Nicaragua aboard the USS Saratoga to join the 2d Brigade. Between March and April 1928 he commanded a company under Major Keller Rockey. On 13 May 1928, while leading a combined action between Marines and Guardia Nacional troops against bandits near the Bocaycito River, north of Pena Blanca, Hunter was fatally wounded and killed. He was postumously awarded the Navy Cross for his bravery in September 1928. From the Robert S.
