| Description |
Robert Askelon Rayner, toll-gate keeper. The toll-gate projected four feet over the road on the southeast corner of Wilson Avenue and Dufferin Street. At the time, road construction and maintenance was contracted to private individuals, who received the toll fee and had to maintain the road in good condition. Later, when the toll-gate was removed, the road was maintained through statute labour by the local farmers. This photo was taken some time before 1885.
