Summary
[edit]DescriptionRiverside Graveyard - geograph.org.uk - 1020796.jpg |
English: Riverside Graveyard The graveyard of the Auld Kirk lies next to the river Ayr and the riverside walk between the Mill Brae car park and the town centre. The tall memorial in the foreground was erected by Mrs Christian Baird, for her engineer husband, John, who died in 1856. It also commemorates her nephew, James Smellie, who died at sea aged 30. His ship was wrecked on 24 March 1872 off the coast of France, having sailed from Bengal on its way to London. The memorial conveys Mrs Baird's great fondness of this young man and her sadness at his loss. Mrs Baird lived on to 1894. |
