Summary

[edit]
Description Risk driving chemical compounds in European streams. Toxic Unit ranges of the top 30 compounds sorted by maximum values for (A) algae, (B) crustacean and (C) fish. Boxplot hinges represent the 25th and 75th percentile, and the upper/lower whiskers ± 1.5 * IQR (interquartile range). The centre line represents the median concentration. The dashed line represents the acute risk threshold of 0.1, the bold line represents the chronic risk threshold of 0.02, 0.001 and 0.01 for algae, crustacean and fish, respectively (Malaj et al., 2014). Pesticides and biocides are coloured in green, pharmaceuticals are coloured in blue, other chemicals are coloured in purple. The asterisk denote compounds without available measured ECx values (i.e. prediction-based TU values). Long compound names are annotated using abbreviations: didecyldimethylammonium (DDAm), benzyldimethyldodecylammonium (BDDAm), N,N-dimethyldodecylamine (NNDDA), hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMAm), hexadecylpyridinium (HDP), triphenyl phosphate (TPhP), thiophanate-methyl (TPM), 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 1,2-benzisothiazolinone (1,2-BIT), N,N-dimethyldodecylamine N-oxide (DDAO), tris(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate (TEHP), perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA), 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO), 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP), triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO), 2-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (OIT), 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate (TXIB), tri-isobutylphosphate (TiBP), tetrachlorosalicylanilide (TSCA), 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4HT).
