Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Corresponds to Unicode character ⛥ (U+26E5) of the same name. An old symbol, dating back to ancient Greece, Sumer/Babylonia, and China. Often used by Wiccans and other neo-pagans or occultists to represent the four classical material elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) plus the 5th element, “quintessence”, which is variously called Aether or Spirit. The medieval tale “Gawain and the Green Knight” made this the heraldic charge on Gawain’s arms, with a long stanza explaining why, in Christian terms (the Five Wounds, etc). The left-handed version is also on the Flag of Morocco, where it presumably means something else.
