English: The wording on the historical photo reads: "The remarkable 110 foot deep cut was excavated by large steam powered shovels, which were hauled up the ridge by teams of mules. Though not maintained for over 60 years, these cut slopes remain in use today, a testimony to the engineering feat of the construction of the Ridge Route." This photographic marker is found to the north of Swede's (also referred to as Culebra) Cut on California's Ridge Route, and is placed there instead of facing the northbound traveler because Swede's Cut is less obvious to discern when traveling southbound. |
